ELECAMPANE (INULA HELENIUM) HOME REMEDIES

Elecampane (Inula Helenium) is a natural remedy that belongs to the sunflower family. It has a variety of names. For instance, some people call this herbal medicine Elecampane, Marchalan, or Horse-heal. 
This medicinal plant can be found in many areas around the globe, including Great Britain, central and southern regions of Europe. The distribution range also includes Asia and Himalayas.


Elecampane herb has been widely used by ancient people for a long time. Europeans and Greeks were cultivating this natural remedy, because of its various medicinal proprieties. It was used for its ingredients when it comes to preparation of different types of Alcoholic drinks during the Medieval Period. 
It was mentioned in books by famous writers as it was used in traditional Chinese medicine. 
The solid substance present in the roots is insulin, which, although it is a polysaccharide compound, like sugar, does not increase the blood sugar.

Description of Elecampane Plant (Inula Helenium)

Leaves:  are extended green leaves with toothed edges.
Roots: it has multiple secondary roots, light gray and hard.
Flowers: are about 2 inches with many yellow rays. Those brilliant yellow flowers absolutely look like sunflowers and are particularly used for medicinal purposes.
Height: this plant can merely grow from 4 to 5 feet high.

Health Benefits of Elecampane Plant (Inula Helenium)

One of the most important health benefits of Elecampane is its special ability to increase the expectoration in chronic lung conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.
Other proprieties: aromatic, anthelmintic, bactericidal, fungicidal, expectorant, sedative; stimulant; diaphoretic; diuretic; emmenagogue, expectorant, antiseptic, astringent, tonic, anti-spasmodic.
The health benefits of Inula Helenium include improving stomach function; treating nausea and diarrhea; and killing worms that can live in the intestine. These worms include hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, and whipworm. Elecampane produces an active principle called helenin, which is antiseptic and antibacterial, making the root useful in salves and surgical dressings.

Home Remedies of Elecampane Plant (Inula Helenium)


The flowers and roots are used for medicinal purposes, either dried or fresh. The Elecampane oil is also used for medicinal purposes.
Preparation:

The dried roots of Elecampane are used to make the tea (herbal tea).

Simple decoction: add 2 tablespoons of shredded roots to 1 cup of water. Bring to boil for 10-15 minutes at a low heat. Strain and optional add honey to taste and a slice of lemon. Drink 1-2 cups a day.

Concentrated decoction: add 4 tablespoons of shredded Elecampane roots to 1 cup of water. Bring to boil for 10-15 minutes at a low heat. Allow to cool. Take 3-4 tablespoons per day.

Elecampane Syrup:
1/2 cup dried Elecampane root
Cinnamon sticks, optional (few small pieces) 2 1/2 cups Water 3/4 cup raw Honey 1 ounce Elecampane tincture
Bring the roots and Cinnamon to a boil, then reduce the heat until the liquid is reduced to half. Strain and blend the herb. Add honey to the tea till is still warm enough to dissolve the honey. Once cooled to room temperature, add the Elecampane tincture and stir.

Natural Cough Remedy Elecampane with Honey
In autumn, dig the entire Elecampane plant up. Cut off the roots and wash them well. Then, slice the roots into pieces of about 1-2 inches. Place the pieces in a jar enough large to fill half of it. Pour honey over, until the jar is full. Shake the jar a few times a day for 5-7 days. Keep the mixture in the refrigerator. Take 2-3 times a day when you are coughing.

Elecampane Tincture:
Put 200 gr of root powder in a liter of alcohol 75 degrees.
Let it soak for 15-20 days. Then use  – 6-12 drops in juice, water, under the tongue, or as desired. May be taken 3 times daily. Shake well. Store in cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children.

Tonic Wine with Elecampane
Add 30 grams of dried roots of Elecampane to 1 liter of red wine. Let it soak for 3-4 days. Dosage: take 1 to 2 tablespoons a day, for asthmatic people.

Side Effects and Precautions of Elecampane Plant

Avoid use during the pregnancy.  People who have high or low blood pressure should check the blood pressure when using Elecampane. As for allergic people, especially for those who are already allergic to some plants belonging to the sunflower family, should check with a healthcare provider before taking Elecampane.
