Datura Stramonium is a natural remedy, valued as a medicine, although it is considered a poisonous plant. Datura Plant Description


This herb (Datura Stramonium) has woody stalk branches, that forms a bush up to 60 to 150 cm (2 to 5 ft) tall.
The flowers are white or purple colored, that generally flowers throughout the summer. They have a pleasant smell and bloom merely at night.

Stramonium produces fruits, but they are neither good for medicinal uses nor edible.

The leaves have a bitter and unpleasant taste that contains alkaloids, the main source of all its therapeutic values and hallucinogenic properties. The cultivated plants include a high amount of alkaloids compared to naturally grown ones.

This medicinal plant has long been used for asthma symptoms in Ayurveda due to the active agent atropine.

Datura Preparation


Powdered leaves, 1/10 to 5 grains. Fluid extract leaves, 1 to 3 drops. Fluid extract seeds, 1 to 2 drops. Tincture leaves, B.P. and U.S.P., 5 to 15 drops. Powdered extract, U.S.P., 1/5 grain. Potential Side Effects and Precautions


Datura can be a poisonous plant only if large quantities are eaten and the following symptoms may occur:

● Blurred vision, giddiness, confusion
● It can affect the nervous system – produces delirium, amnesia.
● Increases the heart beat – tachycardia.
● The juice of Datura leaves may be harmful for the eyes.
● Taking Datura in large quantities can result to dilated pupils.
● Constipation: Datura may cause constipation.

The first symptoms generally occur around 30 to 60 minutes after eating the herb (Stramonium). These symptoms last approximately 24 to 48 hours, but have been reported cases that last almost two weeks long. Ask your doctor before taking any type of treatment.
